A bruise is a bluish, purple coloured patch off skin resulting from damaged blood cells deep below the surface. It might have been caused by a knock or impact and might feel tender and swollen at first. Some people bruise more easily than others, older people for example have thinner skin and the tissue under the skin is more fragile. If you bruise regularly or bruises appear for no apparent reason than you should consult a doctor because it may be the sign of an illness or other condition.
Arnica is one of the best known treatments for bruising and muscle damage and has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties to reduce pain and swelling. The secret with Arnica is to make sure it is applied quickly, via a sprayed-on infusion, a cream or gel, and then it can improve the processing of congested ‘bruised’ blood under the skin. A witch hazel compress made with ice can also help reduce swelling and a Comfrey oil or ointment can be used as an astringent, to help heal the damaged tissues.
