Burns are caused by damage to the skin from exposure to heat or flame as well as to electricity, friction and some chemicals. A burn can range from minor to life-threatening so it’s important to know when to take it to a medical professional but in all cases get away from the source of the burn and cool the burn by running it under cool water for 20 minutes. Generally if a burn is larger than the palm of your hand, it should be seen by a doctor and not touched.
Lavender oil and Tea Tree oil are both soothing for minor burns and promote healing of the tissues to prevent scarring. Aloe Vera can be used for collagen synthesis for healing burns and wounds and if you can extract the raw gel from the plant itself it makes an excellent first aid treatment of minor burns. Calendula is soothing, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and astrigent making it a good herb to use as a cream for minor burns and sunburn. Distilled or a decoction of Witch Hazel contains chemicals which are thought to be antiseptic, anesthetic and anti-inflammatory and can be applied to a clean burn before any bandages are applied.
