Catarrh is the result of a build up of mucus in the airways due to irritation of the membranes of the nose and throat. Typically catarrh occurs after a cold but can also be the result of hay fever or other allergies. Usually, for most of us, catarrh disappears soon but for some people it becomes a chronic problem with few treatments. If you’ve suffered for an extended period with catarrh you should visit your doctor to rule out any other causes.
Steam offers temporary relief from catarrh and adding some herbal oils can be effective at dislodging mucus. Eucalyptus oil and/ or Peppermint oil drops in boiling water can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the membranes of the nose and throat and can offer some relief. Eucalyptus especially is an effective decongestant and the leaf oil contains the checmical Eucalyptol which loosens phlegm. Eyebright is also an anti-inflamatory and soothes the airways for any allergy related symptoms.
