Motion sickness, also known as kinetosis, is the feeling of nausea, dizziness and sometimes actual sickness, brought on by a car, plane, boat or train journey. It happens because there is a conflict between the balance systems in our inner ear and the perception of movement. Some people are more prone to motion sickness than others such as children, pregnant women and those who suffer from migraines.
Ginger has a long history of being used to relieve nausea and vomiting and some believe chewing a piece of crystalized Ginger or even raw Ginger root, to be the simplest and most effective herbal treatment for motion sickness. Drinking Ginger tea or decoction of Ginger root before and during a journey is also a good option. Alternative herbal remedies for motion sickness include Peppermint tea and infusions of Fennel or Fenugreek, which should both be tried.
