A sprain is an injury to the tendons, or ligaments, that attach muscles to a joint, usually the ankle or knee, and frequently the result of an impact, stretch or twist. Most sprains are relatively minor but a trip to your GP is needed if the pain is severe or worsens, you cant use or put any weight on the affected limb, or the area is discoloured and symptoms dont improve after a few days.
For minor sprains, the most effective herbal treatment is a cold compress made with an infusion of Comfrey or a diluted tincture of Comfrey or Marigold. Comfrey contains allantoin which promotes the growth of new cells and helps heal the damaged fibres. Arnica also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties to reduce pain and swelling.
