Sunburn

Don’t let sunburn spoil your summer!

Sunburn is damage to the skin caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays that are present in sunshine. It should be treated in the same way as a burn but the first thing to do is to avoid any further exposure by staying in or covering up until all symptoms have gone. Sunburn can range from mild in which the skin is sore, red and goes flaky, to severe which can involve blistering, dehydration and sunstroke. Any amount of sunburn should always be avoided if possible by using the correct sun protection factor or staying out of strong sunlight.

Herbs can be used to treat mild sunburn by soothing the burn and reducing the pain but first the area of skin must be cooled under cold water. Chamomile, Witch Hazel or Lavender can be applied as cooling infusions or ointments to the affected area and are all astringent and anti-inflammatory.
